Avebury Dig 2014 – Day 1

And we’re off! Yesterday the digging started for this year’s Between the Monuments excavation on the West Kennet Avenue Occupation Site. The fencing is up, the loos and the tea making kit are in place and, after a small episode playing portacabin shuffle, that’s in the right spot too.

Let the digging commence!

Let the digging commence!

It was gloriously hot and sunny, which always makes deturfing a hard slog but we’ve now got three trenches open. We’ve reopened Trench 2 to finish what we started there last year, and we’ve opened two new ones: Trench 1 and Trench 5.

We're up and running with Trenches 1, 2 and 4 on this year's dig.

There’s plenty more digging to come so watch this space, or better still come down and take a look for yourself. From tomorrow there’ll be dig tours every day starting from the Barn Gallery of Avebury Museum.
