Foot of Avebury Down Dig – Day 12

We’ve been finishing off the squares in Trench 9 today and we seem to be getting a few more flint tools here compared with the trenches over the fence. We also have a couple of exciting looking features which have been revealed, and which look really great as dark circles surrounded by the white chalk. Well, one looks like a dark circle, the other is a more semi-circle as we’ve caught it running under the edge of the trench.

The feature in the photo above also has a flint scraper to go with it (a tool used for activities such as scraping animal hides or wood), which was spotted in the very top of the fill. These features look like they could be a couple of interesting, possibly Neolithic pits to go with the one excavated by Emily in Trench 1 last week. These new features will be excavated over the next few days after they have been planned, so we will keep you updated.
